About Pottstown

Situated along the scenic Schuylkill River, the Borough of Pottstown was founded in 1752 by John Potts.

He came from a family of ironmasters who established a forge here, beginning the town’s long and rich history of making things. For more than two centuries Pottstown was a manufacturing and industrial hub, providing employment, housing and a sense of community for waves of courageous immigrants seeking the American dream.

Today, Pottstown is transforming itself from a place that once made Mrs. Smith’s Pies and provided steel for the Golden Gate Bridge to a creative center for arts and culture. A new generation of daring dancers, musicians, visual and performing artists and organizations, as well as culinary artists, are calling Pottstown home. Its historic architecture, tree-lined streets and neighborhoods, and walkable downtown also make it an ideal place for families, businesses and visitors.

Historic downtown Pottstown stretches the length of High Street, along the borough’s southern border, with nearby access to the Schuylkill River Trail. Unique to the town is its Bike Pottstown program, which offers free bike rentals for daily use and convenient bike racks around town.

Residential areas with neighborhood schools and commercial pockets branch out from High Street and provide convenient, bike- and pedestrian-friendly living. Pottstown also manages its own affordably-priced public bus system.
